Lumai, a cutting-edge optical computing startup, has secured over $10 million in funding to advance its revolutionary AI acceleration technology. The investment round, led by Constructor Capital, also included contributions from existing investors like IP Group and new backers such as PhotonVentures, Journey Ventures, and State Farm Ventures. Founded in 2022 as a spinout from the University of Oxford, Lumai is focused on overcoming the limitations of traditional AI computing models. By using optical processing, the company bypasses the constraints of silicon-based GPUs and integrated photonics. Its innovation involves processing core AI operations using light beams traveling through 3D space, allowing for faster, more energy-efficient computation. This breakthrough technology enables the acceleration of large language models (LLMs) and other transformer-based AI applications.

Lumai's technology is poised to change the landscape of AI inference. The company claims that its optical computing approach will reduce AI inference costs by up to 90% while delivering up to 50 times the performance of silicon-only accelerators. In addition, it will consume only 10% of the power required by conventional AI systems, significantly reducing both capital costs and total cost of ownership for AI data centers.

Lumai recently won ‘Best Overall Technology’ at the Global OCP Future Technologies Symposium and was selected for the Intel Ignite London program. Additionally, co-founder Dr. Xianxin Guo was chosen to join the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Shott Accelerator 2024 program, while Dr. James Spall earned a spot on the prestigious Photonics 100 list for 2025.
