Hugo Lu is a British-Chinese entrepreneur and data engineering leader who grew up with a deep interest in technology and economics. He studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at the University of Oxford, followed by a Master's in Development Economics, which gave him a grounding in the mechanics of systemic problems at scale. His career began in investment banking at Rothschild in London before he pivoted into the fast-growing world of technology.

After banking, Hugo moved into strategy at JUUL, where exposure to the company's data challenges first sparked his interest in data engineering. He went on to lead the data function at Codat, a London-based fintech, where he confronted firsthand the complexity of coordinating reliable data pipelines under resource constraints. The experience crystallised a conviction: data orchestration was the critical unsolved problem for lean data teams, and the available open-source solutions were far too heavy and engineering-intensive for most organisations to maintain.

In 2023, Hugo co-founded Orchestra alongside Will Davies to build a unified, no-code control plane for data and AI operations. The platform allows data teams to build pipelines, automate execution, and monitor quality without maintaining any underlying infrastructure — compressing work that previously took months of in-house engineering into an out-of-the-box solution. Orchestra raised £1 million led by Moonfire Ventures, with Sequoia's Scout Fund and angels from dbt, Snowflake and Snowplow participating. Within its first year, Orchestra built a community of over 30,000 data practitioners and signed enterprise customers including the San Francisco Giants and Powell Industries.
