Michael Stanton is a materials scientist of Asian heritage and the co-founder and CTO of Ki 13, the London cleantech company turning waste biomass into green hydrogen and biogenic CO₂. He studied for a bachelor's degree at the University of Pennsylvania, working alongside his studies at the Singh Center for Nanotechnology, before moving to the UK for a Master's of Research and then a PhD in physics and nanotechnology at the University of Cambridge.

He stayed at Cambridge as a Research Associate and Translational Fellow between 2020 and 2022, where his work shifted towards novel routes for producing hydrogen from waste materials. That research is the technical foundation the company was built on: rather than splitting ultra-pure water, Stanton's approach uses lignocellulosic biomass as the feedstock, cutting the electricity required per kilogram of hydrogen by roughly half. He also supervised undergraduates at Magdalene College during his time there.

Stanton joined the Carbon13 venture builder in 2022 and co-founded the business with Koji Muto that December, originally under the name Ki Hydrogen. As CTO he owns the electrochemistry and the engineering roadmap, and now leads a technical team that includes an engineering lead recruited from Mission Zero and a principal scientist in electrochemistry from UCL. The company raised £3.7 million in seed funding in September 2026 to build its first industrial pilot plant.
