Nitish Mutha

Nitish Mutha is a software engineer and machine learning researcher who grew up with a passion for electronics, programming, and robotics. After working for five years as a software engineer — developing technology used by one in ten Americans — he moved to the UK to complete an MSc in Machine Learning with Distinction at University College London, where he was taught by pioneers behind Google DeepMind. It was at UCL that Nitish met Rafie Faruq, and together they set out to use AI to democratise access to legal knowledge.
As co-founder and CTO of Genie AI, Nitish leads the engineering and research function, having built the company's proprietary AI-native legal editor from the ground up over nearly eight years. His deep technical background spans deep learning, reinforcement learning, and large-scale NLP systems — and he has guided Genie through multiple pivots, from a law-firm-facing tool to a self-serve platform serving over 130,000 businesses worldwide. He has also participated in a design-innovation workshop at MIT Media Lab and maintains an active open-source engineering presence.
Under Nitish's technical leadership, Genie AI has built agentic capabilities that allow AI to directly modify legal documents while maintaining human oversight — a significant advancement over static AI assistants. The platform processes contract drafting, review, and negotiation in one unified editor, having raised $20 million in funding from Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures and been named among the 1,000 largest AI companies in Britain.
