Dr. Peter Jianrui Liu is a Canadian medical doctor and entrepreneur whose career sits at the intersection of oncology, machine learning, and early cancer detection. Trained in clinical medicine with deep expertise in cancer research, Peter pursued graduate study at the University of Oxford, where he developed the foundational insights that would lead to the creation of Oxford Cancer Analytics (OXcan). His background bridges rigorous clinical training with the computational methods needed to tackle one of medicine's hardest problems: detecting cancer before it becomes incurable.

In 2020, Peter co-founded OXcan alongside Dr. Andreas Halner, applying advanced proteomics and tailored machine learning to liquid biopsy data. The company's early research, published in the peer-reviewed journal iScience (Cell Press), demonstrated that its novel machine learning pipeline more than doubled detection rates across eight cancer types by identifying key protein biomarker signatures in blood samples — a significant advance over existing approaches. OXcan's primary focus is lung cancer, the world's leading cause of cancer-related deaths, where early detection can increase five-year survival rates by up to twelve-fold.

Under Peter's leadership as founding CEO, OXcan built partnerships with over twenty healthcare centres across three continents, established a state-of-the-art in-house proteomics laboratory, and raised a total of $16.7 million in funding — including an $11 million Series A round in January 2025 led by We Venture Capital and Cross-Border Impact Ventures. Peter stepped down as CEO in late 2025 to pursue other interests, remaining a significant shareholder and advisor, having established OXcan as a frontrunner in AI-powered liquid biopsy for early cancer detection.
