Rafie Faruq is an entrepreneur and machine learning specialist who co-founded Genie AI in London in 2018, driven by a belief that access to legal knowledge should not be a privilege of large corporations. He holds an MSc in Machine Learning from University College London, where his thesis explored the application of generative AI to structured text — a foundation that directly informed Genie's core technology. Before founding Genie, Rafie worked as a derivatives trader and advised the Law Policy Commission, published research with the Law Society, and represented the Ministry of Justice on foreign trade missions.

As CEO, Rafie has steered Genie AI from a tool aimed at law firms into a self-serve platform empowering over 130,000 businesses globally to draft, review, and negotiate legal contracts without a lawyer. The company's agentic legal editor handles complex document workflows end-to-end, allowing commercial teams to close deals faster and at significantly lower cost. Genie's unique proprietary editor is fully DOCX-compatible, supports track changes, and integrates AI agents that modify documents directly while keeping users in the loop.

Genie AI has attracted backing from top-tier investors including Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures, raising $20 million in Series A funding. The company has been recognised as one of the 1,000 largest AI companies in Britain by the Startup Coalition and won 'Best Place to Work' in the startups category from The Sunday Times. Rafie's vision is for Genie to become the global standard platform for legal transactions — surpassing law firms in both trust and capability.
