Kromek Group is a Durham-based, AIM-listed global leader in radiation detection and bio-detection technology, spun out of Durham University's physics department in 2003. The company was built around its proprietary Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) semiconductor technology — a material that enables high-resolution digital and colour detection of radiation, operating at room temperature and without the cryogenic cooling required by earlier-generation detectors. Kromek is the only commercial business in the world to produce CZT, giving it a unique position across multiple high-value detection markets.

Kromek's product range spans three core segments: advanced medical imaging (enabling earlier detection of cancers, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis), homeland security and nuclear detection (including wearable radiation detectors used by the US Secret Service, first responders and border security agencies), and bioaerosol detection for pandemic early warning systems. Its D3 family of compact, high-performance radiation detectors was co-developed with DARPA, and its systems have been deployed in response to events including the Fukushima disaster.

The company has raised more than $100 million in investment capital across its history and secured a landmark £30 million commercial deal with Siemens Healthineers in 2025. Government contracts include a £1.3 million award for its AI-powered i-RASE radiation detection project. Kromek trades on the AIM market under the ticker KMK and employs more than 170 people across operations in the UK and USA.
