Dr. Arnab Basu MBE

Dr. Arnab Basu is an entrepreneur of Indian Bengali heritage and the founding CEO of Kromek Group, a global leader in radiation detection and bio-detection technology. An international PhD graduate from Durham University, Arnab spun Kromek out of the university's physics department in 2003, building on pioneering research into Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT), a semiconductor material that enables high-resolution digital detection of radiation across medical imaging, nuclear security and homeland defence applications. He was named Ernst & Young's UK Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009 and received an MBE for services to regional development and international trade in 2014.
Under Arnab's leadership, Kromek has grown into a publicly listed company on the AIM market (ticker: KMK), with a team of over 170 people and operations spanning the UK, USA and beyond. The company is the only commercial producer of CZT globally, and its detectors have been deployed by the US Secret Service, used in the first response to the Fukushima disaster, and integrated into medical imaging systems for the early detection of cancers and cardiovascular disease. Kromek has also developed pioneering bioaerosol detection capabilities for pandemic early warning systems.
Kromek has raised more than $100 million in investment capital over two decades and secured a landmark £30 million deal with Siemens Healthineers in 2025. The company continues to win significant government contracts, including a £1.3 million funding award for its AI-powered i-RASE radiation detection project. Arnab remains a prominent voice on defence, technology and SME policy in the UK.
