Samudra Oceans
.avif)
Samudra Oceans is a UK climate-tech company building data infrastructure for the blue economy, founded in 2022 by Joyeeta Das and Alex Facey. Its thesis is that ocean-based climate solutions — particularly seaweed cultivation, which can sequester roughly twenty times more carbon per unit area than terrestrial forest — have been held back by the absence of reliable monitoring and verification.
The company deploys AI-powered static monitoring robots equipped with sensors and cameras across seaweed farms and other marine projects. The hardware tracks water temperature, salinity, turbidity, and biomass growth, while the software layer translates that data into farmer-facing dashboards and verifiable impact reporting for project developers, impact investors, and regulators.
Samudra raised £800k in pre-seed funding in late 2023, led by the British Design Fund and including Carbon13, the Tech Nation Climate Programme, and the Kiloton Fund. The company is operational in the UK, Scotland, and Jamaica, with projects in development in India and Sri Lanka, and a stated long-term ambition of removing one gigatonne of atmospheric carbon by 2033.
