Sofant Technologies
.avif)
Sofant Technologies is an Edinburgh-based deep-tech company developing proprietary RF MEMS (radio-frequency micro-electromechanical systems) technology for next-generation wireless communications. Founded in 2011 as a spin-out from over a decade of research at the University of Edinburgh, the company has spent more than a decade translating fundamental semiconductor science into a commercially viable platform that addresses one of the most persistent challenges in antenna design: power consumption.
Sofant's approach replaces conventional semiconductor switches in phased array antennas with RF MEMS components, reducing power consumption by more than 70% and eliminating the need for expensive cooling systems. The result is phased array antennas that are significantly smaller, lighter, and more energy-efficient — qualities that are critical for satellite communications terminals, defence platforms, and 5G infrastructure where size, weight, and thermal management are key constraints. The company adopts a fabless semiconductor model, partnering with established high-volume manufacturers to ensure scalability and cost efficiency.
Sofant has raised over £6 million from investors including EMV Capital, Scottish Enterprise, Kelvin Capital, the National Security Strategic Investment Fund, the UK Space Agency, and the European Space Agency. In 2025, the company achieved a landmark industry milestone by demonstrating the world's first fully functioning Ka-band transmit array using its proprietary RF MEMS beamforming IC — validating the commercial readiness of its technology ahead of early customer deployments in satellite communications and defence.
