RedCat Pub Company Raises £52M to Expand Its Pub Estate
July 31, 2024
RedCat Pub Company, the UK managed pub operator, has raised £52.1 million from Oaktree Capital Management, alongside undisclosed co-investors, to fund the continued expansion of its pub and restaurant estate.
RedCat was founded by Rooney Anand, the former CEO of Greene King, one of the UK’s largest pub and brewery groups. Anand led Greene King for nearly fifteen years, overseeing significant expansion of the business before its £2.7 billion acquisition by Hong Kong-based CK Assets in 2019. RedCat represents his return to the sector as an independent operator, backed by institutional capital.
The company operates a portfolio of managed pubs — sites run directly by the company rather than under tenancy or franchise arrangements — with a focus on community and destination pubs in market towns and suburban locations. The managed pub model gives RedCat direct control over quality, pricing, and the customer experience, differentiating it from the traditional pub company model of tenanted estates.
Oaktree Capital Management, the Los Angeles-based alternative investment firm with over $180 billion in assets under management, is a familiar presence in UK hospitality. The firm has backed a number of leisure and hospitality businesses through its credit and special situations funds, and its investment in RedCat reflects continued institutional appetite for well-managed UK pub assets despite broader consumer spending pressures.
The raise will be used to acquire additional pub sites, invest in existing venues, and grow the management team as RedCat scales its estate.
