Dr Chun Tan is a British-Chinese engineer and entrepreneur who completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at University College London, where his research at the UCL Electrochemical Innovation Lab laid the scientific foundations for what would become Gaussion. Alongside fellow PhD researcher Dr Tom Heenan, he spent several years conducting experiments with particle accelerators to analyse battery and fuel cell materials, discovering that magnetic fields could dramatically improve how lithium ions travel within battery cells.

Chun co-founded Gaussion in 2022 as a UCL spinout, serving as Co-Founder and COO. The company commercialises a patented magneto-electrochemical platform — branded MagLiB™ — that applies an external magnetic field during charging to simultaneously speed up charge times and reduce cell degradation. The technology is chemistry-agnostic, meaning it works across all battery types from consumer electronics to electric vehicles.

Gaussion raised a £2.85 million seed round in 2023 led by BGF and UCL Technology Fund, followed by a $12 million Series A in 2024 led by Autotech Ventures. The company's IP portfolio spans over 40 patent filings across 11 families, and it is actively scaling pilot programmes with leading energy and automotive partners.
