Navjot Sawhney is the founder of The Washing Machine Project, a London-based social enterprise building a manual, off-grid washing machine for households without reliable electricity or running water. The company has reached more than 30,000 people across refugee camps and low-income communities in over a dozen countries.
Sawhney trained as an engineer at Dyson and Jaguar Land Rover, where he worked on cost engineering and graduate research. A volunteer placement with PRAKTI in Puducherry, India in 2016 — where he met a neighbour who hand-washed clothes daily — became the founding insight for the company. He left full-time employment in 2022 to run TWMP.
The Washing Machine Project has worked with the United Nations, Oxfam and the World Food Programme, and has been covered by the BBC and The Guardian. Sawhney has been recognised on Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe.
