Gardin Raises £3.7M to Give Greenhouse Growers a Real-Time Pulse on Plant Health

Gardin, the Oxford-based agtech company developing real-time plant health monitoring technology, has secured £3.7 million in seed funding. The round brought together a consortium of investors including Alchimia, LDV Capital, MMC Ventures, Navus Ventures, Oxford Invention Fund, and Seedcamp—a group whose collective focus spans deep tech, visual AI, and European agrifood investment. The capital is earmarked for expanding the company's commercial team, growing its customer base, and continuing to develop the sensor and software platform at the heart of its offering.

Agriculture remains one of the only large-scale industries that does not measure its core product—crop health and yield—accurately and in real time. Growers in greenhouses and controlled environment agriculture (CEA) facilities have historically relied on visual inspection, manual sampling, and destructive chemical analysis to assess plant status. By the time a problem becomes visible to the eye, intervention is often too late to prevent significant loss. This lag between reality and insight is the gap that Gardin was founded to close, and it sits within an addressable global CEA market currently estimated at around $200 billion and expanding rapidly as demand for reliable food supply chains grows.

Gardin's technology centres on a proprietary optical photosynthesis sensor that measures crop photosynthesis in real time, non-destructively, and at scale. The sensors sit above crops and capture multimodal biological signals that its AI platform converts into clear, actionable insights: early warnings of stress, nutrient deficiencies, or suboptimal growing conditions, often before any visible change in the plant. The system has been deployed across more than 20 crop species in environments ranging from polytunnels in Spain and Morocco to commercial greenhouses in the Netherlands and Canada. Customers have reported up to a tenfold return on investment through improved yields and more efficient use of water, energy, and fertiliser inputs.

Since its commercial launch in June 2023, Gardin has built a growing base of greenhouse and seed breeding customers who use the platform to make operational decisions that were previously based on intuition or infrequent manual testing. The company has also attracted Innovate UK grant funding, and has been deployed by customers including Agriculture Investments Limited under multi-year contracts. Energy efficiency is a particular area of focus, with early trials suggesting growers can achieve 20 to 30 percent reductions in energy costs when guided by Gardin's real-time photosynthesis data.

LDV Capital, which leads the seed syndicate's thesis around visual technology and AI applied to real-world data, has backed Gardin since its initial pre-seed round in 2021, reflecting ongoing conviction in the team and technology. Navus Ventures, the Lely-linked Dutch agrifood investor, brings deep sector expertise and a European commercial network. MMC Ventures and Seedcamp have been consistent supporters throughout the company's development. Gardin founder and CEO Sumanta Talukdar described Navus as the best agriculture-focused investor in Europe, underscoring the strategic significance of their continued involvement as the company moves from early commercial traction toward multi-continent scale.
