Playgap Raises Seed Funding to Monetise Offline Mobile Gaming
Author:

Playgap, an advertising technology startup focused on mobile gaming, has raised seed funding to develop its platform for monetising offline gameplay. The company is addressing a structural gap in the mobile games advertising market: while the majority of ad revenue in mobile gaming is delivered through internet-connected sessions, a meaningful proportion of mobile gameplay — particularly in casual, puzzle, and strategy games — takes place without an active internet connection, on commutes, in areas with poor signal, or when users have turned off mobile data. This offline session time has been effectively invisible to the advertising ecosystem, representing significant untapped monetisation potential for developers.

Playgap was founded by a team with deep experience in mobile advertising and gaming technology, drawing on professional backgrounds at companies including Unity Ads, Adcolony, GameAnalytics, MoPub, Tapjoy, and AOL. The founding team's experience across both the advertising and gaming sides of the ecosystem gave them a distinctive vantage point from which to identify the offline problem: they had seen directly how advertising delivery infrastructure was built around the assumption of constant connectivity, and how that assumption left a substantial portion of developer inventory unmonetised.

The platform works by pre-caching advertisements and delivery logic on the device before the player goes offline, enabling ads to be shown during offline play sessions in a way that is functionally transparent to the user experience. When connectivity is restored, the platform reconciles session data and ensures proper attribution and reporting. This approach requires both SDK integration on the developer side and a sophisticated synchronisation layer to handle the complexities of offline data management and fraud prevention.

The broader mobile gaming market context makes Playgap's focus particularly timely. Mobile gaming is the largest segment of the global games industry, generating more revenue than console and PC gaming combined. The average mobile gamer plays for more than half an hour per day, and casual games — the category most likely to be played offline — represent the largest audience segment. For developers of these games, finding additional monetisation sources without compromising the user experience has become increasingly important as user acquisition costs have risen.

The seed funding will be used to complete SDK development, onboard initial developer partners, and build the commercial and engineering teams needed to scale the platform's reach across the mobile games ecosystem.
