KluraLabs
.avif)
KluraLabs is a Cambridge-based deep-tech materials science company that develops antimicrobial and preservation technologies for everyday packaging and surfaces. Founded in 2020 as CodiKoat, the company's core innovation involves integrating antimicrobial properties directly into packaging materials — particularly food packaging — to slow microbial growth, extend product shelf life, and reduce food waste at scale, without compromising the taste, quality, or sustainability profile of the packaged product.
The problem KluraLabs targets is enormous in both economic and environmental terms. Food waste accounts for roughly 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and a significant proportion of that waste occurs during the supply chain — in storage, transit, and retail — before food ever reaches a consumer. Existing solutions typically rely on chemical preservatives within the food itself, or on refrigeration, neither of which fully addresses microbial spoilage at the packaging interface. KluraLabs' approach treats the packaging as an active participant in food preservation: its technology uses nanostructure-based surface chemistry to create an antimicrobial barrier that inactivates bacteria, moulds, and viruses on contact, extending the window in which produce, bakery, pre-packed meals, and other perishables remain safe and fresh.
The company's technology is designed to integrate with existing packaging supply chains, avoiding the need for manufacturers to adopt entirely new processes. KluraLabs has partnered with Marks & Spencer to begin commercial deployment of its packaging innovation across fresh produce, and holds two patents covering its core nanostructure chemistry. The company is also active in healthcare and industrial applications through products such as CrossGuard, an antimicrobial nitrile glove developed in partnership with Unigloves that eliminates 99.9% of selected bacteria in 60 seconds.
KluraLabs is backed by Ahren Innovation Capital, JamJar Investments, Bramble Investments, Triple B, Winklevoss Capital, and Innovate UK, having raised a total of over £8 million including a £6.2 million Series A in early 2026. The company was named on Forbes' Manufacturing & Industry 30 Under 30 list for 2022 and operates from the EpiCentre research park in Haverhill, Cambridge.
