Cera Raises $150M Series C to Scale AI-Led Home Healthcare Across the UK
January 13, 2025
Cera, Europe's largest digital-first home healthcare provider, has completed a transaction in excess of $150 million to further scale its AI-led home healthcare technology. The Series C round includes investment from BDT & MSD Partners, Schroders Capital, and a group of undisclosed investors, bringing the company's total funding to over $570 million.
Founded in 2015 and formally launched in 2016 by Dr Ben Maruthappu and Marek Sacha, Cera was born from Maruthappu's personal experience watching his mother receive fragmented care after a back fracture. As a practising NHS doctor, he recognised a system built around hospitals when the real opportunity lay in supporting people at home. The company delivers care, nursing, telehealth consultations, and prescription services — all managed through a mobile app — operating across the UK and Germany.
At its core, Cera is a data and AI business as much as a care business. Its platform has reduced hospitalisation rates by 52%, predicted up to 80% of hospitalisations seven days in advance, cut patient falls by 17%, and saved the NHS over £1 billion in costs. Before the end of 2025, Cera will have delivered its 100 millionth patient home visit. The company reached unicorn status in 2025 and has been ranked the UK's number one HealthTech by Deloitte Fast 50 three years running.
The business has also been acquisitive — PitchBook data shows Cera has made twelve acquisitions to date, including First City Nursing Services in December 2025, cementing its position as the dominant operator in UK home care.
Maruthappu has described Cera's broader ambition as reversing the NHS crisis through technology at scale. The Series C funding will be used to deepen the platform's AI capabilities, expand across geographies, and grow the company's team of over 12,000 carers.
