Three Spirit Raises £3.6M to Scale Its Plant-Based Non-Alcoholic Drinks Globally
August 19, 2024
Three Spirit, the London-based plant-based drinks brand, has raised £3.6 million to accelerate the growth of its non-alcoholic drinks range across the UK and international markets. The company is one of the leading players in a fast-growing category of functional non-alcoholic beverages that aim to deliver real physiological effects — calm, sociability, energy — through a combination of botanical extracts and adaptogens, rather than through alcohol.
Three Spirit was founded with a specific ambition: to create non-alcoholic drinks that actually do something, not simply non-alcoholic versions of existing products. The conventional non-alcoholic drinks market had for decades been dominated by soft drinks, juices, and cordials — options that felt, to the adult social drinker, like an admission of exclusion from the ritual of sharing a drink. Three Spirit's founders approached this differently, drawing on functional botanical science to create drinks that interact with the nervous system in meaningful ways. Their portfolio includes Livener, which features guayusa, lion's mane mushroom, and sea buckthorn for an energising effect; Social Elixir, which uses kanna, damiana, and ashwagandha to produce a sociable, euphoric lift; and Nightcap, which draws on valerian, passionflower, and lion's mane for a calming, sleep-conducive effect. The range is designed to be mixed or consumed neat, and to function as a credible adult beverage in the contexts where alcohol would otherwise be served.
The market context for Three Spirit's raise is strong. The no- and low-alcohol beverage category has been one of the fastest-growing segments in the drinks industry globally, driven by a structural shift in consumer attitudes towards alcohol — particularly among younger adults — and by the rise of moderation movements, sober curiosity, and wellness-oriented consumption. Mainstream retailers and on-trade venues have expanded their no/low offerings significantly, and the premium end of the market, where Three Spirit competes, has attracted increasing consumer investment in products that offer more than simple abstinence.
The funding will be used to expand Three Spirit's production capacity, build out its distribution network in the UK and internationally, and develop new products within its botanical drinks portfolio. The raise reflects growing investor confidence that functional non-alcoholic beverages represent a durable category, not merely a trend.
